NZ GST Returns: A Simple Guide for Sole Traders

For a lot of sole traders, GST is the part of running a business that causes the most stress. But it's far simpler than it looks once you know the rules. Here's the plain-English version.
What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) in New Zealand is charged at 15%. If you're GST-registered, you add 15% to your sales and claim back the GST on your business expenses. You file regular returns with Inland Revenue (IRD), paying the difference or receiving a refund.
Do I have to register?
You're generally required to register for GST once your turnover reaches $60,000 in any 12-month period. Under that, registration is optional — though some sole traders choose to register early so they can claim GST back on start-up costs. If you're close to the threshold, keep an eye on it; registration is your responsibility, not IRD's.
How often will I file?
Most small businesses file GST every two months or six months. Returns and payment are usually due by the 28th of the month after your taxable period (with a couple of exceptions around the holidays). Pick a frequency that matches your cash flow and admin capacity.
The easiest way to stay on top of it
Honestly, the simplest approach is to have your bookkeeping kept current all year, so your GST return is just a press of a button rather than a panic. We handle GST for sole traders across NZ — reconciled properly, filed on time, every period.
